Edo Kiriko (glass-cutting) craft is said to have originated with Bunjiro (later Kyubei Kagaya), the assistant manager of Kagaya, the Nihonbasi glass wholesaler, who returned from an apprenticeship in Osaka and beganto etch designs on the surface of glass using emery sand. An anecdote goes that on the arrival of the so-called Black Ships in 1853, Kyubei Kagaya presented an Edo Kiriko jar to Commodore Perry, who was amazed at the level of craftsman apparent in the work.
